If email notifications are working now, I guess I'll just keep everything technical in this thread.
It looks like Fidel is interested in serving web content from theflyingdutchmen.net. I assume we can still point a subdomain like forum.theflyingdutchmen.net at the forum. Then we can serve the homepage and other static content from cPanel and link to the forum from there.
Is Fora a separate deal at this point? Sorry, I'm not clear on what a 'local gem' is or, more importantly, why it should be such a pain to use. I guess I assumed it was like a module that you could just put in the modules folder and then any other required non-local modules could be installed in the same folder later.
How big a deal is it to push non-big changes. Like, if I just wanted to add a favicon or tweak the stylesheet, is that worth doing.

Yep, that shows up under Finished threads and there is now only this thread under Unfinished.
As you can see it's marked 'Solved' but I can apparently undo that if I want to blow the thread wide open again. As a moderator, do you see an 'Undo' link there too? -

Regarding local gem. What I mean is, if you want to change the way stuff looks on here (The "Fora" part of the TFD site) you've got to push to https://github.com/cmbaldwin/fora/, go to your other repo for TFD, update those gems (bundle update), then push THAT repo to github, too. Versus just being able to edit ONE repo and then push that and be done with it.

The wheel sucks. We should be on hover boards by now. We tried lots of other stuff. The wordpress and phpBB options had too many...options but weren't easily customizable. Other options either lacked support or important features and are written in a language that we're not fluent in.
This is the cleanest most intuitive interface with exactly the functionality we need and no labyrinth of administrative features that cater to a thousand different use cases that are irrelevant to us. Also, it's been educational.
Anyway, I didn't get notifications for either of the previous posts.

Posts should move downward chronologically but the page does need to auto-scroll to the most recent post. Don't know about pagination, responding with quotes or tagging users yet. The subscribe button is at the bottom of the side bar on the left but there should be is another at the bottom of the page IMHO.

Should be working now.
The emails, I was aware of (original issue here), tried to make a quick hack last night, didn't have time to actual test how it worked. I found a better solution.For now I'm using something called Mailgun to send mails, you've got to manually confirm participation on those e-mails. I sent that confirmation email a few minutes.

Above you can see me testing to make sure the subscription button functionality works with my own account on this thread. It looks like there is some trigger that's not happening for:
if you contribute to the thread
a subscription is created for you automatically
endRegardless, the button says "unsubscribe" on the thread now, for me, because I created it--and in this situation no subscription record in the db is necessary because the thread already belongs to me. However, should we add this above functionality--posting means a subscription?

Quotes is a big deal for me. Without that, there goes how I organize how and what I reply to.
Actually, quotes were showing up after clicking the submit button. I just added a style to the .css so you can preview them too. That still needs to be tweaked. It does weird stuff on mobile and needs a newline so you can reply easily.
There's a second 'Subscribe/Unsubscribe' button at the bottom now. That will show alongside pagination when we get that working. The page also auto-scrolls on PC now but it would be better to auto-scroll to the anchor tag of the most recent post.
didn't have time to actual test how it worked. I found a better solution.
It's working now. I'm getting emails. Might be a good one to submit a PR for.

I would put that as a check box under user settings (default = checked)
