First of all very well done on the new homepage (with logo), the sign in/out options and switching 'Ask a Question' to 'Start a Thread'. Maybe there's other stuff I'm missing but it's coming together nicely. IMHO Important stuff (in order of importance)
-- restrict users (to the four of us). At this point, I don't think we should have a public signup option even available.
-- email notifications about new topics and about new posts on topics you're subscribed to.
-- rich-text + img/links/codeblocks etc. so that we show/tell exactly as we like.
-- private threads (i.e. Only visible to users you select when those users have signed in.) I can handle Bootstrap, material-icons and other cosmetic stuff. everything else can wait until the four of us are completely satisfied with the user experience and it has a permanent server that theflyingdutchmen.net points to.

Rich-text table_column migration testSakoshi.jpgSo, I made a little mistake in the code and directed the rich_text at a non-backwards compatible table column before I did the proper migration, so we lost a couple rich text posts, as you can see above. This should be consistent for the future. Now on the why the mail isn't working...

Making another post to check what happens on subscriptions from the logs, will post analysis in an edit here.

                  image.pngKey part:

                  ActionView::Template::Error (undefined method `gravatar_image_tag' for #ActionView::Base:0x0000000000d6d8
                  2021-10-26T00:36:18.984620+00:00 app[web.1]: Did you mean? gravatar_url_for):

                  Related references:
                  user_mailer controller
                  app/views/fora/user_mailer/new_post.html.erb:2

The "gravatar_image_tag" method appears to not exist in the repo, it may have been something I removed or something that wasn't backwards compatible from some other gem that was used before I forked simple_discussion. I wanted to remove this stuff anyway, so we can later add our own custom user image functionality. Going to try that now, and I'll post another test post here when finished.

edit: I'm pretty sure it was trying to refer to this method. I don't want to deal with that though, so just removing and simplifying the notification emails to avoid any errors for now.

                  ---------Error #2-----------
image.pngOk, now I just made a ActionText call error. I've got to call the action text, then the body of the action text, THEN the html_safe html. Fixing this now:
                  image.png-----Next Error-----

                  image.png
I went with MailGun instead of SendGrid, dunno why, just to try it out. Looks like one has to manually add recipients at the free tier (up to 5). Anyway, it's fine for our purposes for now. Can switch to SendGrid later (a bit more liberal) if we want. See here for more information: https://help.mailgun.com/hc/en-us/articles/217531258

Does heroku have shell access. I assumed emails could be sent pretty simply with inotify.

If email notifications are working now, I guess I'll just keep everything technical in this thread.

It looks like Fidel is interested in serving web content from theflyingdutchmen.net. I assume we can still point a subdomain like forum.theflyingdutchmen.net at the forum. Then we can serve the homepage and other static content from cPanel and link to the forum from there.

Is Fora a separate deal at this point? Sorry, I'm not clear on what a 'local gem' is or, more importantly, why it should be such a pain to use. I guess I assumed it was like a module that you could just put in the modules folder and then any other required non-local modules could be installed in the same folder later.

How big a deal is it to push non-big changes. Like, if I just wanted to add a favicon or tweak the stylesheet, is that worth doing.

                            (hope this posts)

Yep, that shows up under Finished threads and there is now only this thread under Unfinished.
image.pngAs you can see it's marked 'Solved' but I can apparently undo that if I want to blow the thread wide open again. As a moderator, do you see an 'Undo' link there too?

You should see this message, I changed the e-mail subscription settings here: https://github.com/cmbaldwin/fora/commit/120ef7900c87bcc5e3e8d59bdb5a763ae238ceb7

Can you add another message to this thread.

Regarding local gem. What I mean is, if you want to change the way stuff looks on here (The "Fora" part of the TFD site) you've got to push to https://github.com/cmbaldwin/fora/, go to your other repo for TFD, update those gems (bundle update), then push THAT repo to github, too. Versus just being able to edit ONE repo and then push that and be done with it.

Doesn't it seem like you're reinventing the wheel here? Seems way too much work just for a place to accommodate our long-winded posts/discussions.

The wheel sucks. We should be on hover boards by now. We tried lots of other stuff. The wordpress and phpBB options had too many...options but weren't easily customizable. Other options either lacked support or important features and are written in a language that we're not fluent in.

This is the cleanest most intuitive interface with exactly the functionality we need and no labyrinth of administrative features that cater to a thousand different use cases that are irrelevant to us. Also, it's been educational.

Anyway, I didn't get notifications for either of the previous posts.
